You need to find some common ground to talk about before most internet relationships can go anywhere. At this stage there is only one place that you can hope to find anything to start your message with - and that's in their profile. We talked about this earlier - about how you should use their profile as the starting point for your message. You should also find it much easier to compose your message using this - see it as a helping hand.
Some users believe that by just subscribing to an online dating service they are bound to start one or more internet relationships. This is not always true and you have to be yourself. What's the point in taking the time to get a conversation going if you don't show that you have an opinion about anything? Think about it from the recipient's point of view - does it mean that you don't hold an opinion about anything or does it mean that you are just desperate to converse with somebody - anybody? By expressing your views on things it makes you a more interesting person and helps others get to know what makes you 'tick'. If your match can't get on with someone who holds your opinions its doesn't matter how early or late in the relationship you decide to tell them how you really feel - it won't work out in the term. On the other hand nobody should have to put up with listening to unwanted bigotry. So if you have very controversial views you may want to 'water them down' a little until you've found out how the other party feels about the subject in slightly more subtle ways.
One of the best ways of getting a conversation going is by asking open ended questions. We believe that any question that can be answered with a one word answer isn't a good question to ask. You might ask 'Are you happy where you live?' That can easily be answered with one word. Instead, why not try asking 'What are the best things about where you live?' You are far more likely to get a longer response to the second question that can, in turn, open up more subjects for you to talk about. Internet relationships have to be worked at in a slightly different way to face to face friendships. It may not be what you ask but more how you ask questions that can make all the difference between something moving forward and not.
