Making Anonymous Phone Calls
This was, perhaps, a slightly 'iffy' title for this page as it suggests something which most dating services, telephone companies and the Police take great exception to! In the course of sending messages to your matches you may well get responses which offer you their phone number. We recommend that, if you can, you should try to keep your own number secret. We just feel it's a sensible precaution and no one should feel there is anything wrong in doing this.
Dating services, are not full of multiple murders. Watching the news bulletins may make you feel that the whole world is populated by bad people and that you're the only normal person in the world but statistically speaking you would be extremely unlucky to start dating a serial killer! On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with ensuring your personal safety as much as reasonably possible.
Don't forget to withhold your number before calling someone from your home phone. If you're not sure how to do this then your phone company should be able to help you - often you just need to dial a series of numbers before you dial the number you're trying to call. The other, slightly less convenient, option is to make the call from a public pay phone. Don't worry about what the other person will think of you by withholding your number - most dating services recommend doing this. Your match should realise that you're just being cautious and sensible.
Don't forget that there can be any number of reasons why someone may not want you to have their phone number. For instance, they might work away from home a lot or perhaps they share a house or apartment with friends and, therefore, they might not appreciate you phoning up saying 'Hi, it's John from Pearmatch' to one of their housemates. Nearly all dating services advise against doing this but it can still occasionally happen. You should always respect the other persons wishes and shouldn't push them into giving you their phone number. If they want to take things further with you then they'll suggest a workaround!
